Breathe Easy: Red Onion, Honey & Olive Oil Drink for Mucus and Throat Relief
There are times when your body whispers before it shouts — a subtle heaviness in the chest, a tickle at the back of the throat, or thick mucus that muffles your voice. You don’t need complicated formulas or endless remedies. You need simple, nurturing care from your kitchen.
This red onion, honey, and olive oil drink is a gentle home remedy for chest mucus, designed to soothe irritated airways, ease throat congestion, and support natural mucus clearance. It is a supportive, natural solution for mild chest congestion, lingering coughs, and seasonal allergies.
Benefits of Red Onion, Honey & Olive Oil
This gentle kitchen combination brings together three natural ingredients, each with unique properties that help support respiratory health, ease throat irritation, and promote mucus clearance:
- Red Onion: Rich in sulfur compounds and quercetin, red onion helps loosen and thin mucus in the lungs and chest, making it easier to expel. Its mild anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties also soothe irritated airways, supporting natural respiratory function.
- Honey: Contains natural enzymes and antioxidants that coat and calm the throat, reducing irritation caused by post-nasal drip or coughing. Honey also has mild antimicrobial properties, helping maintain comfort in the throat while the body clears mucus naturally.
- Olive Oil: Extra virgin olive oil provides healthy fats and anti-inflammatory polyphenols, which soften raw tissues in the throat and airways. This gentle lubrication supports easier passage of mucus and reduces discomfort from irritation.
Together, these ingredients form a supportive, natural drink that helps the body release mucus gently, ease chest congestion, and restore a feeling of light, clear breathing.
How to Make Your Lung-Friendly Drink
Ingredients (per glass):
- ¼ medium red onion
- 1 glass water
- 1 tablespoon raw honey
- 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
Instructions:
- Pour 1 glass of water over ¼ red onion and simmer gently for a few minutes.
- Remove from heat and let it cool slightly.
- Add 1 tablespoon honey and 1 tablespoon olive oil, stirring until smooth and golden.
- Drink this once in the morning to help loosen mucus accumulated overnight, soothe post-nasal drip, and start your day with clearer breathing.
- For an evening serving, repeat the same process before bed to relax and soothe your airways, support natural mucus clearance during sleep, and reduce nighttime coughing or throat irritation.

For an optional complement to this ritual, you can also enjoy a glass of clove drink in the morning or evening. Steep 2 whole cloves (or the equivalent in powdered form) in warm water. For added warmth, a tiny pinch of black pepper can be included, though this is entirely optional. This gentle addition can be enjoyed alongside your red onion, honey, and olive oil drink as another soothing moment of care for the throat.

Hi Jim, thank you so much for sharing! We’re so happy to hear this simple ritual has brought you such comfort and that you’ve noticed a positive difference. Wishing you continued ease and wellbeing!
Hi Donna, thank you so much for reaching out!
Yes, the recipe makes one full glass for the morning and one full glass for the evening. When we say “sip,” we simply mean to enjoy the glass slowly and comfortably rather than drinking it quickly, allowing the warmth to be soothing.
Since you mentioned having COPD, please check with your doctor or respiratory healthcare provider before adding this or any new home remedy to your routine, especially if you have ongoing or increased mucus, coughing, or breathing difficulties.
Wishing you warmth, comfort, and gentle breathing.
I do this faithfully twice a day. I had a severe mucus issue and this has dramatically reduced the mucus and coughing.
Plan on trying this! I have copd and plenty of mucus!
But you did not mention how much to take, you did use the verb ‘sip’. Could you please clarify.
Thank you do much!
